Women in IT (Information Technology) have been underrepresented for years, just like in many other business fields. However, in recent times, the situation has been changing for the better, and many women are now taking up roles in the IT industry, which was once considered a male-dominated field. This change is not only positive for the industry itself but also for the entire society.
Serbia, like many other countries, has historically had a lower representation of women in IT, but the situation has been steadily improving. According to a survey conducted in 2019 by the Serbian IT association (JISA), women make up 30% of the IT workforce in Serbia, which shows a positive development for the industry.
Why is the Presence of Women in IT Important?
Women bring a unique perspective and skill set to the IT industry, and their contributions have led to more innovative solutions. After all, Ada Lovelace is credited with being the world’s first computer programmer. In addition, women also bring diversity and inclusion, which is essential for a better understanding of different cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints. This demonstrates that it’s essential to promote the participation of women in IT, not only to achieve gender equality but also to create a more diverse and innovative industry.
Despite the progress, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that women are given equal opportunities in the IT industry, as research shows that a big number of them still face discrimination and harassment in the workplace, which hinders their career growth. This is why organizations need to implement policies that promote equality and respect for all employees, which can help create a better and safer work environment.
Organizations should also encourage more women to pursue careers in IT by offering mentorship programs and providing access to training and development opportunities. Additionally, schools can play a vital role in promoting STEM education for girls and encouraging them to consider IT as a career option.
The survey mentioned above also revealed that women in IT in Serbia are well-educated, with a high percentage having a master’s degree or Ph.D. Interestingly, this study found that women in IT earn on average 20% more than their male counterparts, which is a unique situation compared to many other countries.
In conclusion, women have an essential role in the IT industry, as their contributions bring innovation, diversity, and inclusion. We must continue to promote the participation of women in the IT industry and work towards creating an equal and inclusive workplace.
